Join the Sons of the American Revolution

Contact the Thousand Islands Chapter and we will assist you with the process. Call: xxx-xxx-xxx Email: information@thousandislandssar.org
Joining the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR) involves proving direct lineage to a patriot who supported the American Revolution. The process includes the following steps:
1. Determine Eligibility
You must be a male descendant of a person who supported the cause of American independence between 1775 and 1783. This includes those who served in the military, signed the Declaration of Independence, provided supplies to the army, or held public office supporting the Revolution.
2. Gather Genealogical Proof
Applicants must document their lineage from the patriot ancestor to themselves. This involves collecting birth, marriage, and death records for each generation, along with historical records proving the ancestor’s Revolutionary War service.
3. Contact a Local or State Chapter
Applicants should reach out to a nearby SAR chapter, such as the Thousand Islands Chapter, or their respective state society. Many chapters have registrars or genealogists who assist with the application process.
4. Complete the Application
The official application must be completed using NSSAR guidelines. It requires: • Full documentation of lineage • Proof of the ancestor’s Revolutionary War service • Two SAR member endorsements (in some cases)
5. Submit the Application & Fees
The completed application is submitted to the local chapter, which forwards it to the state and then the national society for review. There are initial fees, including application and membership dues.
6. National Review & Approval
The NSSAR reviews applications for accuracy and historical validity. Once approved, the applicant receives membership credentials and can participate in SAR events.
For those unsure of their lineage, SAR chapters offer assistance in tracing family history and verifying eligibility.
